Context Of Mark
I kept asking God, “what does the church need to study together this year?” I sifted through various topics and different books, but my heart kept getting bent towards the life of Jesus. It has been a rather uneasy year for me. Knowing I am going to lose my friend and ministry partner to retirement and my youngest child to college probably had a lot to do with it. Plus, the year ahead is sure to involve lots of angst, fear and division. I am not sure about you, but I am not ready for it. So I gave in to what God was telling me. We desperately need to walk with Jesus.
The second gospel in the New Testament was almost certainly written by a man named John Mark. His parents had a home in Jerusalem, where Jesus and His disciples sometimes met. He was a companion of Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey, but he left them…which left a bad taste in the mouth of Paul. He became the source of conflict between Paul and Barnabas, but he was restored to friendship with Paul later in life. Mark was the close companion to Peter in Italy, and it is widely held that he wrote the gospel, based on Peter’s witness, after the Apostle’s death. The second gospel is actually the first. Mark probably wrote his gospel in the late 60’s AD and it was a major source used by Matthew and Luke.
The gospel of Mark is the shortest of the 4 gospels by far. He used words that reflect a tone of urgency. Mark started the narrative with the purpose of the book, saying “Jesus is the Messiah, the Son Of God.” From there he wrote a fast paced narrative that forces the reader to ask whether he/she believes that. Is Jesus the anointed Son Of God sent to save us from our sin? Throughout the book, Mark loves to show how people react to Jesus. Some love Him, some hate Him, and some don’t know what to think about Him. Even Jesus’ disciples struggle with who He really is and what it truly means to follow Him.
We shall take the journey that Mark brilliantly takes us on in his gospel and we will be confronted by those same questions. Is Jesus the savior? What does it mean to follow Him? Are we willing to follow Him no matter what goes wrong around us? Do we trust Him no matter what? I invite you to join us as we journey through this historical work. Together, let us walk with Jesus.
